How long does it take to become ”addicted” to regular physical exercise?
Posted by adminI’ve never been a really active person, though I started biking 1-2 hours every 2-3 days and swimming 1-4 hours each week. I heard that after a while people become ‘addicted’ to it (serotonin secretion increasing blablabla), and genuinely miss it if they skip a day or two. But I still do not find it enjoyable, when can I expect this effect to set in if it ever does?
I don’t know. I think it depends from person to person. something that always helps me is to listen to nice upbeat music. I just cannot get myself onto the treadmill without some great music. It makes the time go faster.
I also think that when you see and feel the results of your exercise you will be more motivated to carry on.
I don’t know but I suspect you probably do have a little bit of enjoyment even though it is not as noticeable to you for some reason.

sounds like you have a good routine, people that are addicted to working out generally work out everyday 2 to 4hrs or more.

Well some people that they’ll start, they enjoy it right away.
Then they feel guilty the days they forget to.
You may be thinking of how painful and long the workout is, but instead think of how relaxing and refreshing it is.
Just keep on doing it, it will become a habit within the next month or so.

When you see changes on your body, i mean you will be satisfied on what you had been working on and would like to do more to become better.

I find that I’m more into exercise when I listen to music, But I’m kindve lucky, I love exercise whatever it is. But without music it’s hard to have the same enthusiasm.
I doubt you can force yourself to become addicted. It’ll happen with time I guess.

You need to base a strong schedule around the workouts, it should set in after about a week.
If you give yourself a pat on the back after accomplishing something, and think about what it does for you that will help give you inspiration to go out and do it all again tomorrow.
Try listening to music also, it accually tricks your brain into thinking its not working as hard and It helps loads!

Well, that never happened to me. (Wish it had…)
I think really, the problem is what you are doing. If you aren’t enjoying what you are doing, do something different. The other issue is that you have to really be pushing yourself to get the "runners high" and if you can bike for 2 hours, you aren’t biking hard enough. If you are swimming for 4 hours, you aren’t swimming nearly hard enough:-)
My total workout, from start to finish is about an hour. When I walk out of the gym, I can barely walk out of the gym. You need that level of intensity to get the best results…
Don’t be doing cardio. Cardio is counterproductive. It helps train your body to burn calories more efficiently, which is great if you are starving and don’t want to lose weight, or want to be able to run a half marathon. But that isn’t our case here. We want our body to BURN as many as possible. So, stop running for distance…
Why you don’t do "cardio"

Do high intensity interval training instead.

In other words, sprint for 45 seconds. Walk for 2 minutes, sprint for 45 seconds, walk for 2 minutes. repeat that five times. I do this on an elliptical machine at the gym and at the pool, swimming sprints. You can do it at the high school track or on a bike climbing steep hills. The goal is to absolutely hit the wall and then recover, then do it over. It is grueling, but not as grueling as 2 hours on a bike.
Look, do a HIIT twice a week for 20 minutes each time, I guarantee better results than any four hours in the pool or 2 hours on the bike.
Your Choice, 40 minutes or 10 hours a week. I like my time more:-)
Good luck!
