Cloud Hands Tai Chi, Wide Horse, toes \ /, lift each foot slightly, front view - 10/26/08 (Autumn)
ONE BASIC FORM, MANY VARIATIONS
Prof. Cheng Manching’s 37 Posture Tai Chi Chuan Form
http://youtube.com/watch?v=8P-ZCG1ysDo
http://youtube.com/watch?v=USJPmCZ6Efc
http://youtube.com/watch?v=sjV9bx9unxQ
lends itself to many variations.
To deepen and broaden my understanding of the dynamics of tai chi, I like to exaggerate one principle at a time while practicing some variation of the 37 Posture Tai Chi form.
Usually, I begin by applying a particular principle in the compact Cloud Hands version of the form, standing in place (where I don’t have to think about stepping in a variety of directions). I know that if I experience the principle intensely in this compact form, I’ll be able to eventually incorporate it into the full Tai Chi Form as well.
After exaggerating a particular principle to make sure it sinks into my subconscious, I then “dial down the volume control” so the actions become more subtle, barely noticeable to a casual observer. I can feel the principle active inside me, but it’s not necessarily obvious to somebody looking at my form from the outside.
This is how I internalize various tai chi principles into my full form. First I exaggerate each principle, forcing myself to recognize & emphasize the principle in every posture. Then I make it more subtle, so it’s not obvious to a casual observer.
Tai chi is essentially an internal art. A lot happens below the surface. It’s difficult to communicate what’s happening inside my body by a video, which only captures external movements. That’s why I exaggerate various movements in some of my videos, so the internal principles I’m practicing can be better observed by a casual viewer.
**
In this particular variation of Prof. Cheng Manching’s 37 Posture Tai Chi Form, I emphasize this important principle:
SEPARATE WEIGHT COMPLETELY
After my body weight is transferred completely onto one leg, I should be capable of lifting my empty leg off the ground without causing a lot of upper body gyrations and re-balancing of my entire body. My head and torso should not lean or incline in an attempt to counter-balance the empty leg that is separating from the ground. When my leg is truly empty, I should be able to raise it easily to take a step, kick, sweep, stamp, trip, etc.
However, if my stance is too wide, and I’m still relying on my second leg to hold up my body, then I am “double-weighted,” and stuck in the ground. Then, it becomes difficult to retract the “emptying” leg without a lot of upper body gyrations and rebalancing. A sensitive opponent can take advantage of this double-weighted situation, and sweep my leg out from under me. Or, he can follow my wobbling body as I attempt to retract a leg that won’t separate from the ground, and push me while I’m off balance.
In this video I assume a wide horse stance, toes pointed outward approximately 30 degrees. This stance is very similar to a wide Cloud Hands stance, which is part of the full 37 Posture Form.
When all my weight is in one leg, I lift the other “empty” leg slightly off the ground. I try to make sure that my head remains on one plane and does not bob up and down during the lifting of the leg motion. My collar bones should remain parallel to the ground, not tilt to one side or the other. My head and neck should not lean one way or another. My torso should remain square with my pelvic girdle. My pelvis should not tip or lean one way or another while weight is being transferred completely onto one leg. Some inclining of the spine is inevitable when moving sideways in a wide horse stance, but it should be minimal. The more upright the spine throughout the entire form, the better the structural integrity.
If I have successfully internalized this important principle while doing the entire 37 Posture Form, there will rarely be a moment when an opponent can successfully sweep my front leg out from under me. I will always be able to drop my weight completely into my back leg, and lift the front leg quickly off the ground before a leg sweep can become successful. By remaining balanced and upright while the empty leg is being lifted or retracted, I will be in an excellent position to counter an incoming attack.
