My name is Jake Lansburg and I am a sophomore at ASU. I currently work at Banner a Good Samaritan in the Emergency/Trauma Department as an EMT. I chose to do my mastery video on suturing because in the future I aspire to become a medical doctor in either the specialty of emergency medicine of critical care/trauma surgery. I find the human body of the most interest. I find a thrill with trying to collect bits of information, put them together, and diagnose a problem. I also like to do procedures, like suturing.
During my senior year in high school I took a bridge program that allowed me to go to a local community college and take an Emergency Medical Technician course. By the end of my senior year, I had completed the program with honors and took my national registry to become a licensed EMT. I then started at Good Sam in the ER as a tech. As a tech now at Good Samaritan, I am allowed to do a variety of things. My favorite is to suture. I think of it as putting a puzzle back together. Sewing someone’s wound closed is a skill that is obtained through practice and lots of it.
When this project was assigned, I knew that I would demonstrate a skill in medicine, however I was left with only a few options because of the time constraint. I figured that suturing would be easy to show and explain in a minute more than other procedures I would have liked to film and demonstrate. Because I did not have a real wound to close (my roommates are obviously not that enthusiastic about me cutting their skin and trying to close it up) I had to use a chicken breast. A chicken breast is the closest I could get to real skin. Also, because of the time constraint I had to leave some parts out like first cleaning the wound thoroughly and anestitizing the wound before we actually started suturing!
I hope that people realize that their dreams can come true. If I looked back a couple years ago and said I would be working in Arizona’s busiest ER as an EMT I would have laughed at myself. Today, if I told myself I was going to become a successful physician, I am not sure if I would agree. However, with strong willpower and persistence, you can do anything you set you mind to. If this hold true, then in many years to come I will be known as Dr. Lansburg.
